Kampong Chhnang National Solar Park Sets Benchmark For Cambodia’s Clean Energy Transition

The National Solar Park in Kampong Chhnang has become a major milestone in Cambodia’s renewable energy journey. The project is a joint effort between Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and private investors. During a recent press tour, officials described the park as a model for future green energy projects and a strong example of how partnerships can support economic growth while promoting clean power.

Yasmin Siddiqi, ADB Country Director for Cambodia, said the solar park is a pioneering initiative that helps reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. The facility combines large-scale solar power generation with battery storage and advanced movable solar panels. This technology improves efficiency and supports Cambodia’s goal of increasing renewable energy in its power mix. She explained that the project shows how public and private sectors can work together effectively, with the public side building key infrastructure and the private sector focusing on power generation.

The project follows a balanced financial structure. Around $26.7 million was provided through a sovereign loan to EDC to develop the main infrastructure. In addition, about $40 million was invested by private companies for the solar generation facilities, supported by ADB’s private sector operations and other partners. This approach allows the government to retain control over core infrastructure while benefiting from private sector expertise and efficiency.

The solar park has also delivered social and economic benefits to local communities. Many residents found jobs during the construction phase, improving their income and living standards. The project also supported the building of new roads and a bridge, which have improved access and connectivity in the area.

Praing Chulasa, Managing Director of EDC, said efforts were made to reduce the impact on landowners. Fair compensation was provided according to government and ADB guidelines. Farmers are still allowed to use land under the 40-kilometer transmission line, so agricultural activities can continue.

As Cambodia moves toward a cleaner energy future, the Kampong Chhnang Solar Park stands as a successful example of international cooperation, sustainable development, and community-focused growth.
