At the recent Green Development Summit held during MWC Barcelona 2024, Huawei took a significant step forward in promoting the use of digital technology for sustainable and inclusive development. The event, themed “Thrive with Green ICT,” saw participation from notable organizations including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), MTN Group, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Kenya’s ICT Authority, and Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology. These guests discussed leveraging digital technology for green development and creating a sustainable digital world.
Jeffrey Zhou, President of ICT Marketing at Huawei, emphasized the pivotal role of digital technology in global sustainable development. He assured that Huawei would continue to innovate and collaborate with global partners to boost digital inclusion, foster digital talent ecosystems, and contribute to a sustainable digital world.
Bilel Jamoussi from ITU highlighted the Green Digital Action (GDA), an initiative launched by ITU and over 40 partners, including Huawei, aimed at promoting international standards for sustainable development and digital solutions for climate action.
Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, unveiled at MWC Barcelona 2019, was also showcased for its contributions to digital inclusion and environmental protection through innovative technology solutions.
Experts from IUCN and UNESCO shared insights on the intersection of technology and conservation. Ms. Susanne Pedersen talked about how advanced technologies like AI and machine learning can revolutionize data access and analysis for conservation efforts. Dr. Miao Fengchun updated on UNESCO’s Technology-enabled Open Schools for All project, underscoring the importance of digital inclusion and education in addressing digital gender inequality and enhancing human well-being.
The event also highlighted the importance of skills development for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 8, with emphasis on digital technology’s role in skill acquisition and fostering inclusive, sustainable economies.
In a significant move towards digital talent cultivation in Europe, six European universities and colleges were awarded the Huawei ICT Academy plaque, marking a commitment to collaborate with Huawei in fostering digital talent.
The summit underscored the critical role of digital technology in addressing global sustainability challenges and fostering an inclusive, green future.
