IEA’s Clean Energy Market Monitor Report 2024: Accelerating The Global Transition Towards Clean Energy

The IEA’s report on the “Clean Energy Market Monitor” of March 2024 highlights a nearly 50% surge in clean energy investment from 2019 to 2023, showcasing its significant impact on global economic and industrial growth. The IEA’s regular reports analyze clean energy technology development, covering market dynamics, investment trends, innovation, manufacturing capacity, and deployment costs. These assessments inform the trajectory of clean energy development, aligning with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE Scenario) goals.

While fossil fuel markets benefit from real-time data and analysis, the clean energy sector faces challenges in tracking deployment trends. To address this gap, the Clean Energy Market Monitor report aims to provide a timely and concise overview of clean energy deployment for selected technologies. The first edition of this report analyzes trends since 2019, driven in part by COVID-19 recovery packages and the 2022 energy crisis, offering insights into the evolving energy market landscape.

From 2019 to 2023, clean energy investment experienced a substantial increase of nearly 50%, reaching a total of USD 1.8 trillion in 2023. This growth, averaging around 10% annually, underscores the growing importance of the clean energy sector in the global economy. However, despite this rapid expansion, clean energy deployment remains concentrated primarily in China and advanced economies, revealing a need for greater global distribution of clean energy technologies.

In 2023, global clean energy deployment reached new heights, with solar PV and wind power experiencing substantial growth rates of 85% and 60% respectively. Despite this progress, clean energy deployment remains concentrated in advanced economies and China, with the rest of the world lagging. China and advanced economies accounted for the majority of capacity additions for wind, solar PV, and electric cars in 2023, underscoring the need for broader global adoption.

Electric car sales surged by 35% in 2023, reaching 14 million vehicles globally, with China leading the market. However, heat pump sales saw a marginal decline, highlighting the importance of supportive policies to incentivize cleaner energy choices. Nuclear power additions decreased in 2023, emphasizing the need to accelerate development to meet long-term emission reduction goals.

Hydrogen electrolyzer capacity additions experienced significant growth in 2023, driven largely by China. However, despite this progress, annual additions fall short of the multi-gigawatt targets necessary to achieve climate goals.

While clean energy deployment has accelerated since 2019, energy efficiency improvements have lagged. The latest assessment shows a modest energy intensity improvement of around 1% in 2023, falling short of international targets.

The deployment of key clean energy technologies from 2019 to 2023 has made a substantial impact on emissions reduction and fossil fuel demand. Solar PV and wind power deployment alone have avoided significant amounts of coal and natural gas demand, contributing to emissions reductions equivalent to the annual emissions of entire countries.

Overall, clean energy deployment is essential for mitigating climate change and transitioning to a sustainable energy future. However, greater efforts are needed to ensure broader global adoption and accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies to meet long-term emission reduction goals.
