The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), India’s premier hydropower development entity, disclosed ambitious plans for a large-scale solar power venture in Uttar Pradesh, signaling a significant step towards renewable energy expansion. On a notable occasion this Tuesday, it was revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremonially initiated the commencement of the 1,200 MW Jalaun Ultra Renewable Energy Power Park via a virtual platform. Located in Orai, within the Jalaun district, this substantial project represents a strategic move by NHPC to diversify its portfolio, traditionally focused on hydropower.
This green energy project, set to unfold through the efforts of Bundelkhand Saur Urja Ltd, a subsidiary of NHPC, involves an investment of approximately Rs 796.96 crore. The company has outlined a detailed timeline, aspiring to complete the park within a 24-month period following the approval of investments. Once operational, the solar park is expected to generate around 2,400 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, marking a significant contribution to the country’s renewable energy capacity.
NHPC, headquartered in Faridabad and operating under the Ministry of Power, has long been recognized as India’s leading organization in the hydroelectric sector. With a rich history of managing the entire lifecycle of hydropower projects, NHPC’s foray into solar and wind energy development is seen as a pivotal expansion of its expertise and commitment to sustainable energy solutions. This project not only underscores NHPC’s role in India’s energy transition but also highlights the growing emphasis on renewable sources as the country strides towards environmental sustainability and energy independence.
