President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted the Philippines’ eagerness to deepen collaboration with Germany, particularly in renewable energy, during the Philippine-German Business Forum in Berlin. As Europe’s largest economy and a powerhouse in technology and innovation, Germany presents a valuable opportunity for fostering robust business relationships, emphasized President Marcos.
Expressing gratitude for German companies’ interest in supporting the Philippines’ sustainability and climate resilience goals through renewable energy investments, President Marcos outlined the country’s energy transition policies and investment enablers aimed at incentivizing energy efficiency. He emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to developing programs that facilitate the decarbonization of its economy, inviting greater cooperation on climate change and energy transition.
Positioning itself as a regional hub for smart and sustainable manufacturing, the Philippines aims to attract sustainability-driven investments fueled by renewable energy. President Marcos noted the potential for collaboration in critical minerals processing, highlighting the country’s adherence to high labor and environmental standards.
Addressing the challenges of limited sourcing and supply chain disruptions, President Marcos stressed the importance of diversifying production locations and exploring alternative materials. He emphasized the mutual aspirations of the Philippines and Germany for de-risked and diversified production and market value chains, safeguarding their economies from geopolitical uncertainties.
Germany’s expertise in energy storage technology for renewables presents an opportunity for the Philippines, especially in offshore wind (OSW) development. With ambitious targets for renewable energy generation, the Philippines seeks to leverage German know-how to accelerate its transition to a low-carbon future, aiming for at least 35 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040.
