Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the largest oil and gas producer in the Sultanate of Oman, has announced the activation of a solar PV project that supplies power to all three of its internal airports within the oil concession areas of the country.

The completion of the PDO Airport Solar PV Installation Project aligns with the company’s dedication to sustainability, as stated in a recent announcement. Located at the Fahud, Marmul, as well as Qarn Alam airports, this ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system, which is connected to the grid, generates 1227 MWh of electricity yearly. It not only fulfils the energy requirements of the airport buildings during daylight hours but also diminishes CO₂ emissions by 786 tonnes per year.

Green Universe Enterprise (GUE), a local Omani Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), was awarded the contract by PDO to execute the solar PV plants at the three airports following an announcement in January 2023. PDO’s selection of GUE for the project was based on its In-Country Value strategy, aimed at supporting SMEs in the green energy sector and other industries.

Based in Muscat, Green Universe Enterprise is a prominent player in Oman’s small and mid-scale solar PV and sustainability sector. Founded by renowned entrepreneur Sumaya Nasser al Rawahi, one of the first Omani engineering graduates specializing in renewable energy, GUE serves several esteemed public and private sector clients adopting solar and clean energy alternatives as part of their decarbonization strategies. The company has also introduced a financial model enabling clients to finance their projects, facilitating investment in solar power generation.

Funded and constructed by PDO, the internal airports at Fahud, Marmul, and Qarn Alam are presently operated and maintained by Oman Airports in accordance with standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Moreover, various domestic and international airports in Oman have outlined plans to reduce their carbon footprint by investing in solar power generation and other clean energy sources.
