Ajman Municipality and Planning Department (MPDA) has announced the launch of the Ajman Carbon-Neutral Path during its participation in the 28th United Nations climate change conference (COP28), in alignment with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s directive to designate 2023 as the Year of Sustainability in the UAE.

His Excellency Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Nuaimi, MPDAโ€™s Director General, emphasized that the Path aims to position Ajman as a leader in emissions reduction and carbon neutrality. Notably, it stands as the first-of-its-kind project in the region, boasting unique concepts.

The initiative, initially targeting industrial facilities, entails short-term and long-term strategies to mitigate carbon emissions from various industrial activities. The ultimate goal is to contribute to sustainable development objectives. Subsequently, the project will extend to encompass businesses and governmental institutions, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Key strategies include enhancing the utilization of clean energy for electricity generation, implementing waste sorting and recycling practices, promoting eco-friendly transportation, and transitioning production systems towards waste recycling.

The project involves multiple stages, beginning with the assessment of industrial facilities to calculate their carbon footprint and subsequently identifying procedures to reduce emissions.

Implementation of the initiative is scheduled to commence at the start of the following year, accompanied by a comprehensive plan to introduce the initiative, elucidate its implementation mechanisms, and outline the steps for obtaining the environmental label.

MPDA expressed its commitment to intensify collaboration with state institutions and departments to achieve sustainability goals and preserve a healthier environment for future generations.
