Tunisia is embarking on a transformative journey towards renewable energy with the initiation of Project B, a pioneering solar photovoltaic power plant in Feriana town. This ambitious venture, backed by Qair Solar, marks a significant milestone in Tunisia’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Project B, financed with EUR 3.9 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), aims to construct and operate a 10MW solar PV plant. The project, categorized as Environmental Category B, signifies a strategic move towards a low-carbon transition in Tunisia’s electricity generation.

One of the primary objectives of Project B is to contribute to Tunisia’s renewable energy goals while creating employment opportunities in the region. Through rigorous environmental and social due diligence, conducted by independent consultants, the project has been deemed feasible and manageable, with minimal environmental impacts.

Furthermore, the project’s financing structure demonstrates the EBRD’s commitment to providing additional terms and conditions not readily available from local commercial sources. This support underscores the bank’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and facilitating private ownership in renewable energy projects.

Qair Solar, in collaboration with Mazarine Energy BV, has taken the lead in spearheading Project B, with the aim of establishing it as a flagship initiative in Tunisia’s solar energy landscape. The project’s Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) ensures compliance with international standards and regulations, including IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles.

Additionally, the project incorporates enhanced supply chain due diligence to mitigate risks and uphold ethical labor practices throughout the procurement process. Qair Solar’s commitment to zero tolerance for labor violations underscores its dedication to responsible and sustainable business practices.

As Project B progresses, it is expected to not only contribute to Tunisia’s energy transition but also serve as a model for future renewable energy projects in the region. With a comprehensive Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) in place, the project aims to foster collaboration and dialogue with local communities, ensuring their active participation and support throughout the project lifecycle.

Overall, Project B represents a significant step forward in Tunisia’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future, powered by renewable energy solutions and driven by strategic partnerships with global leaders in the field.
