In a significant move towards sustainability, STMicroelectronics, a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, and Centrica Energy Trading A/S, have entered into a groundbreaking ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This strategic partnership, set to commence in January 2025, aims to bolster the supply of renewable energy to STMicroelectronics’ operations in Italy.
Under this agreement, Centrica will deliver approximately 61 GWh of green energy annually, sourced from a newly-established solar farm in Italy. This initiative is expected to substantially support STMicroelectronics’ facilities in Italy, including two major semiconductor production sites in Agrate, near Milan, and Catania, alongside various research and development, design, and sales and marketing locations.
Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, noting it as a pivotal step towards the company’s ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2027. This objective includes a commitment to sourcing 100% renewable energy, highlighting the crucial role of PPAs in the companyโs sustainability journey. The partnership with Centrica is poised to significantly enhance the renewable energy footprint of ST’s extensive operations in Italy, covering a broad spectrum of activities from R&D and design to mass semiconductor production.
Kristian Gjerlรธv-Juel, Vice President for Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation at Centrica, remarked on the mutual benefits of the agreement. He emphasized Centrica Energy’s ongoing expansion and its role in delivering sustainable energy solutions to prominent European tech firms. This agreement underscores Centrica’s dedication to developing robust energy solutions for its global partners and customers, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of renewable energy within the tech industry.
