The Iberdrola Group is advancing its efforts to accelerate electrification in Australia with two significant energy storage milestones in New South Wales. The company has secured a long-term contract from the state government for the Kingswood battery, a 100 MW project, and has officially inaugurated the Smithfield battery facility with a capacity of 65 MW. The opening ceremony of the Smithfield site was attended by the state’s Energy Minister, Penelope Sharpe, underscoring the project’s importance to the region’s energy transition.

Both initiatives play a crucial role in strengthening the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. By enhancing grid flexibility, improving supply availability and efficiency, and supporting a more stable and responsive energy system, they collectively contribute to building a more self-sufficient, secure, and sustainable energy ecosystem in New South Wales.

The Kingswood battery will provide a storage capacity of 1,080 MWh and is designed to deliver energy for a minimum of eight consecutive hours. Once operational, it will be capable of supplying around 65,000 homes during peak demand. The New South Wales Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure recommended approval of the project in December 2025, and it is currently undergoing further assessment by the Independent Planning Commission. Kingswood has been selected for a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement under the state government’s Electric Infrastructure Roadmap, as part of the sixth round of auctions supporting key energy transition projects.

In addition, Iberdrola Australia has completed and inaugurated the Smithfield battery in western Sydney. With 130 MWh of storage capacity and awarded an LTESA contract under round two of the same state program, the project was delivered ahead of schedule and will be able to supply energy to around 20,000 homes. This facility further reinforces the company’s role in enhancing system reliability and supporting the growing penetration of renewable energy across the region.

Australia remains a core strategic market for the Iberdrola Group, particularly as the company expands its focus on energy storage as a critical enabler of electrification, price stability, and secure power supply. Iberdrola Australia has become one of the country’s major renewable energy operators, with over 2,000 MW of capacity currently operating or under construction and providing clean energy to approximately 400 commercial and industrial customers. As outlined in its 2025–2028 strategic plan, the Group aims to invest more than €1 billion in Australia, prioritizing markets and businesses that offer long-term stability, predictable returns, and strong alignment with global decarbonization goals.
