SPIES Packaging, a leading injection-molded plastic packaging manufacturer in Melle, is embarking on a sustainable future with the construction of the “Solarpark Gesmold.” In partnership with JUWI, a renewable energy specialist, SPIES has initiated the development of a ten-megawatt solar park adjacent to its facility. This project, which began construction in mid-March, is poised to significantly enhance the companyโ€™s commitment to sustainability and ensure a stable energy supply.

Once operational later this year, the solar park will enable SPIES to meet over 20% of its electricity needs directly, thereby reducing its ecological footprint and promoting its sustainability goals. The park, spanning 10 hectares with over 18,000 modules, is expected to generate around 10 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. While 70-80% of this output will cater to SPIESโ€™ requirements, the excess electricity will be distributed to the public grid, supporting the region with green energy.

Furthermore, SPIES aims for climate-neutral production at the Gesmold site, focusing on energy efficiency and modernization of its facilities. Measures include upgrading ventilation, lighting, compressed air systems, and production lines within an advanced energy management framework.

In addition to its environmental contributions, the solar park will also focus on species protection. Post-commissioning, the site will be transformed into a habitat for local flora and fauna, featuring grasslands, flower strips, wild hedges, and a special breeding area for lapwings. A meadow orchard will also be established as part of ecological compensation efforts, marking the project as a model for combining renewable energy and biodiversity.
