In a significant stride towards its commitment to sustainable energy, Repsol, the global energy company, has successfully completed the construction of its Frye Solar project, marking its largest photovoltaic plant in the United States to date.
With a total installed capacity of 637 MW, of which 570 MW are currently operational, the Frye Solar project stands as a monumental addition to Repsol’s renewable energy portfolio. Situated near the city of Kress in Swisher County, Texas, the project boasts nearly one million solar panels, symbolizing Repsol’s dedication to clean energy initiatives.
Repsol’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Low Carbon Generation North America, Federico Toro, expressed the company’s enthusiasm, stating, “Repsol views completion of our largest U.S. renewable facility to date as a major milestone that will contribute to our commitment to become a net-zero emissions company by 2050.”
The significance of the Frye Solar project extends beyond its size, as it aligns with Repsol’s overarching strategy of securing long-term returns through power purchase agreements (PPAs). Currently, Repsol has signed agreements for 89% of the project’s output, underscoring its proactive approach to sustainable investments.
The Frye Solar project is part of Repsol’s broader renewable energy endeavors in the United States, with a total installed and under development capacity of 2,091 MW in Texas alone. This includes facilities at Outpost and Pinnington, alongside existing solar power plants in New Mexico, Jicarilla 1 and 2, supplemented by battery storage capabilities.
Renewable energy generation stands as a pivotal element of Repsol’s decarbonization strategy, as outlined in its Strategic Update. With ambitions to invest between โฌ3 and 4 billion for organic development of its global project portfolio, Repsol aims to achieve between 9,000 MW and 10,000 MW of installed capacity by 2027. Notably, 30% of this capacity is earmarked for the United States, bolstered by the consolidation of the Hecate and ConnectGen project pipelines.
Repsol’s foray into the U.S. renewable energy market commenced in 2021 with the acquisition of 40% of Hecate Energy, followed by the acquisition of ConnectGen’s 20,000-megawatt project portfolio in September 2023. These strategic moves underscore Repsol’s commitment to geographical diversification, portfolio enhancement, and fostering substantial growth opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
The completion of the Frye Solar project marks a significant milestone in Repsol’s journey towards a sustainable energy future, highlighting its leadership and dedication in driving the transition towards cleaner, more resilient energy systems.
