The Government of India launched the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on February 29, 2024, intending to significantly increase rooftop solar capacity across residential households. This ambitious scheme, with a total financial allocation of ₹75,021 crores, is set to run until 2026-27, empowering households to generate their electricity.
Recognizing the complexity of selecting suitable solar PV modules and inverters for rooftop installations, where technical specifications can be daunting for consumers, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has introduced a Framework for the enlistment of models from OEMs. This framework aims to assist consumers in making informed choices by highlighting products that offer superior efficiency and warranty.
Key criteria for the enlistment of solar PV modules include a minimum star rating of 3 stars under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s Star Labelling Programme. Additionally, modules must have a minimum capacity of 500Wp and a product warranty of at least 10 years against manufacturing defects. The modules should also achieve a minimum fill factor of 77% under standard test conditions (STC).
For inverters, eligibility under the scheme requires compliance with the Energy Labelling Programme, as specified by the BEE. Hybrid inverters, on the other hand, must meet minimum overall efficiency standards: 92% for 1 KW, 93% for 1 KW to 3 KW, and 98% for over 20 KW, with similar benchmarks for higher capacities.
To streamline consumer access to reliable product information, all enlisted models meeting these criteria will be listed on the national portal. This transparency aims to build consumer confidence and ensure that residential rooftop solar installations achieve optimal performance and longevity.
The framework enhances the existing solar labeling programs by incorporating additional consumer-relevant criteria such as optimum area utilization, PV cell quality, and warranty terms. By providing clear guidelines and a centralized platform for product information, the government seeks to promote the adoption of high-performing solar technologies and drive sustainable energy practices nationwide.
The PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and its framework for OEM model enlistment represent significant steps toward promoting renewable energy adoption at the grassroots level. By empowering residential consumers with accessible information and supporting high-quality solar products, India aims to accelerate its transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
