Pope Francis has initiated the construction of an agrivoltaic plant within the extraterritorial area of Santa Maria di Galeria to provide energy for Vatican City. In his Apostolic Letter titled “Fratello Sole” (Brother Sun), the Pontiff emphasizes the critical role of solar energy in addressing environmental challenges, echoing themes from his 2015 encyclical “Laudato Sì”.
Citing the need for global action against climate change, Pope Francis entrusts the task of building the agrivoltaic plant to Extraordinary Commissioners, granting them full authority to oversee its installation without requiring additional authorization.
The Vatican, already equipped with over 2,394 photovoltaic panels generating 300 MWh annually since 2008, aims for complete energy independence through this new initiative. While specific crop choices for the agrivoltaic plant remain undecided, the project aligns with Italy’s recent regulations favoring agrovoltaic systems over traditional photovoltaic installations on agricultural land.
This move underscores the Vatican’s commitment to sustainability and marks a significant step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels within its smallest state boundaries.
