bp Joins Consortium to Develop Multi-Phase Green Hydrogen Project in Egypt, Accelerating Sustainable Energy Goals

bp has entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to join an existing consortium comprising Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Infinity Power, aimed at exploring the development of a multi-phase green hydrogen (gH2) project in Egypt.

Project Development and Partnership Details

Under the JDA, bp will lead the project’s development and operation on behalf of the consortium, which consolidates their respective green hydrogen initiatives in Egypt. The partnership will explore the potential for a large-scale, multi-phase project focusing on green hydrogen production and derivatives, particularly for export purposes.

Framework Agreement with Egyptian Government

The newly formed consortium has signed a Framework Agreement (FWA) with the Egyptian government. This agreement initiates a series of studies and activities to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of the project.

Significance and Commitment

The signing ceremony, coinciding with bp’s 60th anniversary in Egypt, underscores the company’s longstanding commitment to the country. Nader Zaki, bp’s Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized the consortium’s role in supporting Egypt’s energy transition plans and enhancing regional cooperation in energy projects.

Partner Statements

Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Masdar’s Chief Green Hydrogen Officer, highlighted the consortium’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen development in Egypt and beyond, aligning with Masdar and the UAE’s clean energy goals.

Felipe Arbelaez, bp’s SVP Hydrogen and CCS, expressed optimism about hydrogen’s role in global energy futures and bp’s dedication to unlocking its potential in Egypt.

Mohamed Ismail Mansour, Chairman of Infinity Power, and Nayer Fouad, CEO of Infinity Power, underscored the consortium’s ambition to leverage Africa’s renewable resources for environmental and economic benefits, positioning Egypt as a leader in green energy innovation.

Future Outlook

The consortium aims to establish Egypt as a key player in the green hydrogen sector, contributing to global efforts to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries currently reliant on fossil fuels.
