South Australia has signed the first Renewable Energy Transformation Agreement, securing federal funding to build renewable energy infrastructure sufficient to power all households in Adelaide. This agreement aligns with the Albanese Governmentโ€™s plan to add 32 gigawatts of renewable energy and storage nationwide by 2030 under the Capacity Investment Scheme.

The agreement addresses the need for ambitious renewable energy projects due to growing energy demand and aging infrastructure. It aims to overcome barriers faced by developers, communities, and governments, ensuring a collaborative effort to integrate reliable renewables into the grid and benefit all communities. Here are the key features of the agreement:

Federal underwriting for at least 1,000 megawatts of new wind and solar projects, enough to power Adelaide households.
Federal underwriting for 400 megawatts of new storage capacity, totaling at least 600 megawatts to ensure 24/7 renewable power availability.
South Australiaโ€™s commitment to its Hydrogen Jobs Plan and establishing a state-specific grid reliability mechanism.
Joint efforts to improve community engagement, increase First Nations participation, and enhance planning and approval processes for timely project completion by 2030.
Shared responsibilities for bolstering transmission, skills and workforce outcomes, energy efficiency, community energy resources, and renewable energy supply chains.

“The Albanese Government is delivering the certainty and confidence the market spent a decade asking for.The more renewable energy we have in our grid, the more downward pressure it puts on energy bills because it is the cheapest form of energy to power households and industry.Giving the market the confidence to build new projects is good; signing an agreement to collaborate with South Australia on practical steps to get the best out of this energy transformation for South Australian workers, communities and industry, is great. The Albanese Governmentโ€™s Reliable Renewables Plan is the only plan supported by experts to deliver the clean, cheap, reliable and resilient energy system that Australians deserve. This is in sharp contrast to Peter Duttonโ€™s anti-renewables nuclear plan โ€“ which remains uncosted and unexplained,” said, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen.
