The Annual General and Electoral Meeting of the Electricity Market Association welcomed government officials and industry leaders to discuss Cyprus’s ambitious energy transformation goals. Hosted with enthusiasm by the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, the event highlighted key initiatives aimed at overcoming the country’s energy challenges, including isolation and high costs.
Accelerated Energy Transformation
Cyprus’s energy strategy has been revamped to reduce electricity costs for households and businesses while advancing the country’s green transition. This strategy includes lifting energy isolation, enhancing energy supply security, optimizing natural gas utilization in the Exclusive Economic Zone, and ensuring the competitiveness of both the internal electricity and gas markets.
Key Developments and Initiatives
- Competitive Electricity Market: Efforts are intensifying to launch a competitive electricity market by July 2025, marking a significant milestone in Cyprus’s energy sector evolution.
- Personnel Transfer and Recruitment: The Ministry announced the imminent transfer of personnel from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to the newly established Deputy Service Market Operator (DSMC), aiming to enhance operational efficiency. Recruitment for 37 positions within DSMC is nearing completion, which is crucial for bolstering administrative capabilities.
- Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal: Priority is given to completing the Vassiliko liquefied natural gas import terminal, pivotal for enhancing market competition and reducing pollutants from power generation.
- Renewable Energy Integration: Enhanced grant schemes promote the installation of photovoltaic systems, with self-consumption PV capacity reaching 47% by end of 2023. Challenges such as network saturation and demand-supply balance are being addressed through modernization projects and the promotion of energy storage systems.
- Infrastructure and Funding: Significant funding, including โฌ49 million from the Just Transition Fund and โฌ69.3 million from the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan, supports infrastructure upgrades and digitization efforts across six critical energy projects.
- Hybrid Storage Initiatives: Plans for hybrid installations combining storage systems with renewable energy sources are progressing, aiming for operational readiness by October 2024 under revised regulatory frameworks.
Future Prospects
Ministry officials expressed optimism that 2025 will mark the full realization of a competitive electricity market, fostering affordability and sustainability. The collaboration with the Electricity Market Association is seen as pivotal in achieving these goals, ensuring a smooth transition towards a green economy.
In conclusion, the Ministry thanked the Association for its ongoing support and emphasized the importance of collective efforts in advancing Cyprus’s energy agenda. As the country navigates these transformative initiatives, stakeholders are poised to usher in a new era of affordable and sustainable electricity for all.
