At the Energy Community Donor Conference, Commissioner Kadri Simson underscored the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure following extensive damage inflicted by Russia. The conference focused on mobilizing resources for the newly established Ukraine Energy Support Fund to aid in the country’s recovery efforts.

Commissioner Simson expressed deep concern over Russia’s destruction, which has ravaged nearly half of Ukraine’s winter energy demand capacity since March. The ongoing crisis has already resulted in daily rolling power outages across the nation, with conditions expected to worsen as winter approaches.

“We cannot underestimate the gravity of this situation. Ukraine faces severe challenges in ensuring access to heat, water, and basic services for its people,” Commissioner Simson emphasized. “Our priority now is to restore as much generation capacity as possible before the harsh winter conditions set in.”

The European Union and its Member States have mobilized significant support, with the Energy Community raising EUR 500 million through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. These funds are flexible and aimed at addressing immediate needs arising from recent attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure.

“To date, more than 7700 power generators, nearly 3000 transformers, and millions of energy-efficient bulbs have been donated by EU Member States and participating countries,” Commissioner Simson noted. “However, the scale of destruction demands continued international solidarity and support.”

The Commissioner urged conference participants to contribute to the Energy Community Fund or provide in-kind donations of essential energy equipment. “Every contribution matters in helping Ukraine rebuild its vital energy infrastructure and ensure the well-being of its citizens,” she emphasized.

In closing, Commissioner Simson reiterated the EU’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and called on all stakeholders to join forces in providing critical assistance.
