EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading entity in the integrated planning, purchasing, and supply of water and electricity across the UAE, has announced the extension of its clean energy partnership with Mediclinic Middle East, a major private healthcare provider in the UAE.
Under the renewed agreement, EWEC will supply all of Mediclinicโs advanced facilities in Abu Dhabiโ including its international standard hospitals and primary care clinicsโ with electricity generated from clean energy sources around the clock. This initiative will be validated through Clean Energy Certificates (CECs), ensuring that the electricity used is produced from sustainable sources. The extension of this partnership continues efforts to advance decarbonisation in the UAEโs healthcare sector.
EWEC has been instrumental in promoting the use of Clean Energy Certificates in Abu Dhabi, with notable growth in adoption across various sectors. The year 2023 set a record for CEC adoption, and interest has continued to rise in 2024. CECs enhance accountability, allowing entities in Abu Dhabi to monitor and verify their clean energy use, reduce Scope 2 emissions, and achieve decarbonisation goals.
Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, stated, โWe are proud to deepen our partnership with Mediclinic Middle East, the first healthcare group in Abu Dhabi to utilize clean energy. This agreement reflects our shared commitment to sustainability and underscores the need to decarbonise the healthcare sector, which represents a significant portion of global electricity consumption. By powering Mediclinicโs facilities with clean energy, we are taking substantial steps toward leading the healthcare sector in environmentally conscious practices.โ
Hein van Eck, Chief Executive Officer of Mediclinic Middle East, commented, โOur collaboration with EWEC to provide clean energy to our Abu Dhabi facilities aligns with our sustainability goals and environmental stewardship. This partnership not only boosts our operational efficiency but also supports our broader decarbonisation efforts, with a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.โ
Clean Energy Certificates, issued in one megawatt-hour units, are digital and tradable certificates that comply with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). They represent the environmental and economic benefits of clean energy consumption. EWEC manages the CEC scheme under the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) and is a critical element in the UAE’s transition to a low-carbon economy, supporting the Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
