Thiru M.K. Stalin, the Honโ€™ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, virtually inaugurated the foundation stone ceremony for a cutting-edge green ammonia plant in Tuticorin today. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Tamil Nadu’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy and its contribution to India’s energy transition goals.

In his address, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted Tamil Nadu’s leadership in renewable energy, emphasizing the state’s pivotal role in advancing India’s green energy objectives. “Tamil Nadu has consistently been at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives, and this project in Tuticorin will further solidify our position as a global hub for green hydrogen production,” said Stalin. He also noted the international collaboration involved, with India, Singapore, and Japan working together towards a sustainable future.

The foundation stone ceremony follows a Heads of Terms agreement signed earlier between Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Sojitz Corporation, and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha. This agreement facilitates the cross-border export of green ammonia from India to Japan.

He emphasized the role Singaporean companies can play in facilitating 3rd country collaborations, with Japan as the end market for the green ammonia.

The green ammonia plant, which will span 160 acres in Tuticorinโ€™s port area, is expected to produce 200,000 metric tonnes per annum for export to Japan. The front-end engineering and design work for the plant has already commenced. This project is anticipated to create local employment opportunities in Tuticorin and contribute to the overall development of the region.
