In a significant step towards bolstering energy ties, Cyprusโ Minister of Energy, Trade, and Industry, Mr. Giorgos Papanastasiou, met with Egyptโs new Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Mr. Karim Badawi, in Nicosia today. The meeting marks Mr. Badawiโs first official visit to Cyprus, extending an invitation from Mr. Papanastasiou for a preliminary exchange of views between the two nations.
The discussions focused on recent international and regional developments in the energy sector. Both ministers highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation to achieve the common goal of establishing a reliable energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe. This corridor aims to facilitate the transport of natural gas and green energy between the two regions.
A key topic of the meeting was the acceleration of natural gas field development in Cyprus. The potential use of existing Egyptian infrastructure was explored, particularly the prospect of transporting gas from the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to Egypt. This gas could be liquefied and exported to international markets, leveraging Egyptโs established facilities and enhancing regional energy security.
Both sides expressed a strong commitment to advancing these initiatives, recognizing the strategic importance of collaborative efforts to achieve mutual energy goals. The meeting underscored the potential for deepening energy partnerships and integrating resources to benefit both Cyprus and Egypt in the global energy market.
