TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), announced the start of commercial production at its 2GW solar cell line in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, marking a major milestone for India’s largest single-location solar cell and module manufacturing facility. This follows the earlier commencement of solar module production at the plant.
The indigenous production of solar cells supports India’s clean energy goals, reducing reliance on imports. With an initial 2GW production capacity, Tata Power is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for high-quality, domestically produced solar components, particularly for large-scale projects. The facility is set to reach full 4GW capacity in the coming weeks.
The Tirunelveli plant, equipped with advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, has already produced 1,250 MW of solar modules since October 2023. With a total cell and module capacity of 4.3 GW, the facility will help Tata Power expand its 20% market share in the solar rooftop and utility-scale segments.
TPREL has invested nearly ₹4,300 crore in the facility, aligning with its vision of innovation and self-reliance in renewable energy. The modules from this plant are part of the Government’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), with expectations that its solar cells will also be added to the list soon.
The solar products will initially supply Tata Power’s ongoing projects, with plans for future market expansion. Tata Power also operates a 682 MW module and 530 MW cell manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which has supplied 3.73 GW of modules and 2.26 GW of cells to date.
Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD, Tata Power, said, “The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency. We are committed to making solar power accessible to all and ensuring a bright future for India, powered by renewable energy. We believe that this plant will lead the way in supporting the country’s vision for a Net-Zero carbon future.”
