Etihad Water and Electricity has teamed up with the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) to introduce the Distributed Solar System Project (DSS) in the Northern Emirates. This strategic initiative, announced recently, marks a significant step in advancing the UAE’s net-zero ambitions and underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability.
The DSS project, which began with a comprehensive feasibility study last year, involves the installation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems. The collaboration aims to integrate these systems into the grid, benefiting residential, industrial (excluding those with preferential tariffs), and agricultural customers. While customers will not directly use the energy generated by their solar panels, they will enjoy reduced energy bills as a result of their contribution to the energy grid.
The partnership has led to the development of new regulations and technical guidelines for rooftop PV installations to ensure they meet stringent safety, technical, and financial standards. This effort aligns with Etihad Water and Electricity’s strategy to diversify its operations and support the UAE’s broader sustainability goals.
By implementing the DSS, the UAE will reduce its carbon footprint and offer customers more control over the energy they use. The initiative also aims to raise awareness about the benefits of solar energy and promote its adoption.
