Henkel India Teams Up with CleanMax to Boost Solar Power and Achieve Significant CO2 Reductions

Henkel Adhesives Technologies India Private Limited (Henkel India) has entered into a partnership with CleanMax, a Brookfield-backed company, to reduce absolute emissions in its operations. This collaboration is expected to significantly boost solar power utilization, resulting in additional annual CO2 savings of over 4,500 tonnes at Henkel’s manufacturing sites in Kurkumbh and Thane, equivalent to planting approximately 300,000 trees each year.

A Single User Group Captive Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been formalized between Henkel India and CleanMax. The solar farm for this captive power project will be located in Maharashtra and will be owned and operated by CleanMax. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainable energy practices.

Sunil Kumar, Country President of Henkel India. “This power purchase agreement will enhance Henkel’s contribution to climate protection. By increasing our use of green power and substantially lowering CO2 emissions, we are making decisive strides towards a more sustainable future. The PPA demonstrates how we can drive tangible progress in meeting our ambitious targets,” he added.

Kuldeep Jain, Managing Director of CleanMax, expressed pride in collaborating with Henkel India towards carbon-neutral manufacturing processes. “CleanMax aims to be the sustainability partner of choice for corporates, and this partnership showcases the transformative power of green initiatives in achieving meaningful environmental progress,” Jain remarked.

Henkel India’s adhesive operations have already shown a strong commitment to sustainability, with its manufacturing processes in Chennai being entirely carbon neutral and those in Rudrapur converted to green electrical energy. The new PPA will further enhance solar power usage at its Kurkumbh and Thane facilities, aligning with Henkel’s sustainability strategy.

The company has set ambitious timelines and absolute reduction targets to be achieved by 2030 as part of its climate change mitigation focus on production processes. Henkel aims to continually improve energy efficiency and utilize energy from renewable sources while establishing a Net-Zero pathway for its Scope 3 emissions, in line with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
