The Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA) has taken a significant step towards renewable energy by installing solar energy plants in 15 government buildings across Amritsar. This initiative, part of the Smart City project, aims to reduce reliance on costly conventional power and promote the use of solar energy.
As electricity tariffs continue to rise, the shift to solar power has become increasingly crucial. PEDA is setting an example by equipping government facilities with solar installations, encouraging broader adoption of cleaner energy sources.
Yashpal, District Manager at PEDA, announced, “We have successfully equipped 15 government institutions with solar plants.” The buildings benefiting from this initiative include notable facilities such as Guru Nanak Hospital, Mental Hospital, Civil Hospital, Ram Lal Eye Hospital, various police stations, and educational institutions like the Government Dental College and Polytechnic College.
Since the launch of solar initiatives in 2015, Amritsar has experienced considerable growth in solar energy adoption. The city now boasts over 1,200 grid rooftop solar (RTS) connections with a total load of 43 MW. Among these, two significant solar plants located at Dera Radha Soami Satsang, Beas, contribute approximately 2 MW to the grid.
Both central and state governments are actively promoting the transition to solar power, citing its environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. However, the introduction of free power in the district has slowed solar adoption, with only 264 new connections established since the schemeโs inception, compared to 944 connections by July 2022.
The move towards solar energy is not limited to government buildings. Non-government organizations, such as Punjab Naatshala, have also embraced this shift, installing a 20 kW solar power panel that reduces their energy costs by 75%. Additionally, the Khalsa College Governing Council has switched most of its 18 educational institutions to solar energy.
In a historic move, the Punjab State War Memorial and Museum became the first government building in Amritsar to utilize solar power as part of the Smart City initiative in 2019. More recently, in 2021, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, in collaboration with the United Sikh Mission from the USA, installed solar panels at the Golden Temple, with plans to implement similar projects in other gurdwaras.
Key transportation hubs, including Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport and Amritsar Railway Station, have also installed solar grid rooftop systems, reinforcing the cityโs commitment to renewable energy.
As Amritsar continues its journey towards solar energy adoption, the focus remains on fostering a sustainable future that reduces energy costs while promoting environmental stewardship.
