
The Republic of Cyprus has welcomed delegates from the European Commission, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and fellow Mediterranean nations to the 2nd MED9 Ministerial Meeting on Energy. This crucial gathering, held aims to reinforce cooperation on energy security, climate change, and renewable energy within the Mediterranean region.
In his opening address, the Cypriot representative highlighted the Mediterraneanโs strategic role at the intersection of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. “Energy is not just a driver of economic growth, but a key factor in addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and energy security,” he stated.
The Mediterranean region, with its unique position and potential for energy innovation, serves as a critical hub for collaboration. As member states of the European Union, the attendees share the common goal of climate neutrality. The meeting emphasized the need to promote renewable energy sources and to develop resilient energy infrastructure that can withstand future challenges.
“This Summit provides an opportunity to exchange views and strengthen our collective commitment to a greener and more sustainable energy future,” the representative noted. “By building on the foundations laid at our first meeting in Valletta, we can chart a path that not only benefits our nations but contributes significantly to global climate efforts.”
The 2nd MED9 meeting follows the success of the inaugural session held in Valletta and aims to turn discussions into tangible actions that will enhance cooperation on energy transition, bolster renewable energy capacity, and ensure a sustainable, secure, and affordable energy future for the region.
The Cypriot host expressed confidence that the discussions would lead to productive outcomes, fostering stronger ties among Mediterranean nations. “Together, we can make the Mediterranean region a beacon of sustainable energy development and cooperation.”
The meeting is set to conclude with the adoption of a joint declaration, outlining the region’s shared vision for energy cooperation and sustainability, solidifying the Mediterraneanโs role in global energy and climate leadership.
