Masdar and Emsteel Complete Pilot Project to Produce Green Steel with Green Hydrogen in UAE

UAE-based renewables developer Masdar and steel producer Emsteel have announced the successful completion of a pioneering pilot project to produce green steel using green hydrogen. The project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, marks a major milestone in decarbonizing the steel manufacturing sector.

The demo facility, located at Emsteel’s manufacturing site in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, replaces natural gas with certified green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore. This green hydrogen fuel, certified by Avance Labs under the International Tracking Standard Foundation, is key to reducing emissions associated with traditional steel production processes.

“Green hydrogen is an essential element in advancing national and global decarbonization efforts, and we are proud to lead this initiative,” said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.

The project supports Abu Dhabi’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to position the country as a leading global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
