The Biden-Harris Administration, through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has unveiled the Artificial Intelligence for Interconnection (AI4IX) program, backed by $30 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This initiative seeks to streamline the interconnection process for new energy generation using advanced AI techniques, addressing critical delays in connecting renewable energy projects to the power grid.
A Game-Changer for Energy Interconnection
The AI4IX program aims to modernize the interconnection application process by fostering collaborations between software developers, grid operators (including Regional Transmission Operators and Power Marketing Administrations), and energy project developers. AI-driven solutions will automate the traditionally manual and error-prone application reviews, potentially reducing the interconnection timeline from years to months.
“Artificial intelligence is an energy solution capable of helping clear an interconnection backlog that will free up new energy sources to ensure consumers have power when and where they need it,” stated U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.
Addressing the Interconnection Crisis
Current interconnection queues are overwhelmed, with DOE’s Queued Up Report revealing that the backlog includes unconnected capacity twice that of connected generation. Review processes are labor-intensive, compounded by the fact that over 90% of applications are often deemed incomplete.
AI technology can revolutionize this process by identifying deficiencies in applications more efficiently and notifying developers of required corrections. For example, AI tools trained on accurate documentation standards can quickly flag issues such as incomplete site control documentation—a common challenge due to varying property laws and grid access requirements.
Enhancing Grid Reliability
The AI4IX initiative complements DOE’s broader efforts to improve interconnection efficiency nationwide. This includes the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership (GRIP) Program, which supports AI-enabled software deployment with major RTOs, serving approximately 210 million Americans. Additionally, the Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) Transmission initiative continues to convene stakeholders to promote best practices and innovative interconnection solutions.
