India is set to transform its energy sector through the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at supplying solar power to one crore households by 2027.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, this groundbreaking initiative is designed to provide free electricity to households by facilitating the installation of rooftop solar panels. The scheme targets 10 lakh installations by March 2025, doubling to 20 lakh by October 2025, and reaching a goal of one crore households by March 2027.

In just nine months, over 6.3 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed, with a remarkable monthly installation rate of 70,000—ten times the pre-scheme average. With a subsidy of up to 40 percent, this initiative aims to make renewable energy more accessible while saving the government an estimated ₹75,000 crores annually in electricity costs.

Key Benefits of the Scheme

  • Free Electricity for Households: The initiative offers free electricity through subsidized rooftop solar installations, reducing energy costs for households.
  • Reduced Government Costs: The widespread adoption of solar power will save the government ₹75,000 crore annually.
  • Promotion of Renewable Energy: The scheme encourages the use of clean energy, contributing to India’s sustainability efforts.
  • Environmental Impact: The transition to solar energy will lower carbon emissions, aligning with India’s commitment to a greener future.

Subsidy Details and Eligibility
Households can access a subsidy based on their electricity consumption and the corresponding rooftop solar system capacity. The subsidy varies from ₹30,000 to ₹78,000 depending on consumption, with options for collateral-free loans for up to 3 kW systems.

  • 0-150 units: 1-2 kW system, ₹30,000 to ₹60,000
  • 150-300 units: 2-3 kW system, ₹60,000 to ₹78,000
  • Above 300 units: 3+ kW system, ₹78,000

Impact and Expected Outcomes
The scheme will add 30 GW to India’s solar capacity through rooftop installations, contributing significantly to renewable energy targets. Over 25 years, it is projected to generate 1000 BUs of electricity, reducing CO2 emissions by 720 million tonnes. Furthermore, it is expected to create approximately 17 lakh direct jobs across various sectors, such as manufacturing, logistics, and solar installation.

Model Solar Village Initiative
The scheme includes the “Model Solar Village” program, aiming to make one village in each district energy self-reliant through solar energy. Villages with the highest renewable energy capacity will receive ₹1 crore in funding. The initiative supports rural areas and promotes solar adoption, contributing to energy independence across India.
