Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, has called on citizens to take greater advantage of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Addressing a review meeting in Kolkata, Shri Joshi emphasized the scheme’s benefits, which include up to 300 units of free electricity per household and a total budget allocation of โน75,021 crore.
The meeting involved officials from West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and eight northeastern states, along with agencies working to promote renewable energy. Shri Joshi urged state officials to expedite the implementation of the scheme in their respective regions.
Focus on West Bengal
Highlighting the schemeโs slow progress in West Bengal, Shri Joshi stated that the state has significant potential to perform better. He requested West Bengal ministers to provide greater support for the initiative, which aims to light up 1 crore households with free electricity. The scheme is backed by central government funding of up to โน78,000 per household.
National Progress
The Union Minister shared that the scheme has already registered 1.5 crore participants across the country, with 7.06 lakh households benefiting so far. Stressing the need for collaborative efforts, he urged state governments to supplement the central subsidy with additional state-level support to maximize the schemeโs impact for citizens.
Vendor Engagement
Shri Joshi also met with solar panel installation vendors and service providers in West Bengal to discuss challenges in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Solutions to streamline the process and address implementation hurdles were deliberated during the session.
Participation and Coordination
The review meeting was attended by Shri Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), alongside senior officials from REC, DISCOMs, and renewable energy agencies from the participating states.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is part of the central governmentโs broader mission to promote renewable energy and ensure affordable electricity for all. Citizens are encouraged to register and avail the benefits as states work to enhance the scheme’s reach and efficiency.
