India is steadily progressing in its transition to renewable energy, working in line with both national objectives and international climate commitments. As of December 2024, coal still dominates the energy mix, contributing 45.96% to the country’s total installed power capacity. However, renewable energy sources like solar and wind are gaining ground, reflecting a shift towards cleaner, more sustainable solutions.
By the end of 2024, renewable energy accounted for 35.17% of India’s total installed power capacity, marking a significant milestone. This growth is largely driven by solar energy, with India adding about 24.546 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity during the year. Overall, renewables (excluding large hydro) contributed a total of 28.590 GW, with solar accounting for 60.23% of this addition. As a result, solar energy’s share in India’s total installed capacity increased to 21.18%, a remarkable rise of 33.48% compared to the previous year.
The total installed power capacity of India grew by 7.87% year-over-year, reaching 462 GW in December 2024. This growth is a testament to India’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources, even as it continues to rely on coal for a substantial portion of its power needs. Despite the progress in renewables, coal remains a significant challenge. As coal still accounts for nearly half of India’s power capacity, achieving a balanced energy mix that ensures both reliability and sustainability is essential.

The expansion in renewable energy brings numerous benefits beyond environmental advantages. One of the most notable is job creation. Renewable energy projects, especially in rural areas, not only provide clean power but also help boost local economies. These projects empower communities by improving access to electricity and supporting regional development. Furthermore, technological advancements in the renewable sector contribute to overall energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Solar energy, in particular, continues to lead India’s renewable energy push. The government’s focus on increasing solar capacity is evident, with the country now closer to achieving its ambitious target of 100 GW. In 2024 alone, the addition of over 24.5 GW of solar capacity significantly contributed to this progress.
To ensure long-term success, the government has introduced policies, such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for Solar Modules and Cells. These policies aim to raise procurement standards and ensure high-quality products, fostering sustainable growth in the sector.
However, despite these advances, India faces several challenges. The ongoing reliance on coal requires careful management to prevent disruptions during the transition to renewables. Moreover, addressing the technological, financial, and policy-related hurdles will be crucial for ensuring a smooth and efficient shift to a renewable-driven energy system.
