Tarshid and King Abdullah Medical City Launch Energy Retrofitting Project in Makkah

The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) and King Abdullah Medical City, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, have announced the launch of an energy retrofitting project for 16 facilities and buildings. The initiative, designed to align with international best practices, aims to enhance energy efficiency and significantly reduce electricity consumption.

Key Measures for Optimization

Waleed Al-Ghreri, Board Member and CEO of Tarshid, revealed that the project follows extensive field surveys and technical studies conducted on the targeted buildings. These assessments identified ten critical measures to improve efficiency, focusing on control, air conditioning, and lighting systems.

Specific upgrades include:

• Developing a chiller control system to optimize cooling.
• Scheduling air handling units and installing variable frequency drives to enhance performance.
• Replacing cooling water pumps with energy-efficient alternatives.
• Upgrading the building management system to integrate with advanced cooling and air conditioning devices.
• Retrofitting conventional lighting with high-performance LED systems, complemented by occupancy sensors and smart motion detectors.

Projected Energy Savings and Environmental Impact

The project is set to reduce annual electricity consumption from approximately 47 million kWh to 37 million kWh, representing an estimated savings of 23%. These savings are equivalent to:

• Preserving 17,000 barrels of oil annually.
• Avoiding 6,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, which has the same environmental impact as planting over 102,000 tree seedlings annually.
