On January 14, during the opening day of the 2025 World Future Energy Summit (WFES 2025) in Abu Dhabi, JA Solar signed a major 1.25GW module procurement agreement with China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC). This agreement establishes JA Solar as the exclusive supplier of high-efficiency n-type photovoltaic (PV) modules for the Abydos Phase II 1GW+600MWh PV-Storage Project, the largest of its kind in Africa. The project is developed by AMEA Power and built by CEEC.
The signing ceremony was attended by several key figures involved in the project, including Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power; Mahabir Sharma, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of AMEA Power; Aqueel Bohra, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of AMEA Power; Shupeng Su, President of CEEC Egypt International; and Tony Zhu, President of the Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Business Group at JA Solar. Sicheng Yang, Deputy General Manager of CEEC Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction Co., Ltd., and the Sales Director for JA Solar in the Middle East also participated, signing the agreement on behalf of their companies.
A groundbreaking renewable energy project spanning 20 square kilometers is set to transform Egypt’s energy landscape. The project will host Africa’s largest solar power installation and battery storage system. Once complete, it will produce about 3,000 GWh of electricity annually, powering over 500,000 homes and reducing carbon emissions by more than 1 million tonnes each year. This initiative will boost Egypt’s renewable energy capacity, enhance grid stability, and set a benchmark for solar and storage solutions across Africa.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the project’s importance in advancing Egypt’s Clean Energy Action Plan and fostering sustainable growth. He urged Chinese enterprises involved to increase investments, improve electricity supply, and support Egypt’s Vision 2030 goals. Additionally, Africa’s 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant, a joint effort by AMEA Power, CEEC, and JA Solar, has been successfully completed. JA Solar provided all PV modules for this milestone project. The signing of the Phase II agreement highlights the success of these collaborations and a shared commitment to advancing Africa’s renewable energy sector.
