Indian construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been selected by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) as one of the preferred engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors for the northern site of the world’s first 24/7 solar PV and battery storage gigascale project. The landmark project is set to be developed in the UAE capital.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec), will feature a 5.2 GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant paired with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). Once operational, this will become the largest solar and BESS project globally, capable of delivering up to 1 GW of clean energy around the clock, seven days a week.

Project Highlights:

The facility will comprise two sites—north and south—with capacities of 2.6 GW and 9.5 GWh each.

It represents a critical step forward in overcoming renewable energy intermittency, enabling 24/7 dispatchable clean energy.

The announcement was made during the recent Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) in a ceremony attended by Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar.

Partnership with L&T:

The Letter of Award was signed by Abdulaziz Alobaidli and A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head of Renewables IC at L&T, in the presence of T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at L&T.

S.N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, highlighted the project’s significance:

“This reflects the UAE’s leadership in accelerating sustainable economic progress. L&T is committed to advancing global energy transition through this ambitious initiative.”

T. Madhava Das expressed confidence in L&T’s capabilities:

“This partnership strengthens our position in clean energy projects. Our expertise in dispatchable renewable generation, power transmission, and digital solutions positions us to deliver on this visionary project.”
