South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) has partnered with REC and Bidgely to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to improve consumer services, reduce power theft, and enhance the efficiency and sustainability of electricity distribution.
Bidgely’s AI-driven solutions gained recognition during the Ministry of Power’s Powerthon 2022, a hackathon focused on solving power distribution challenges. At the event, Bidgely showcased its Energy Theft Solution, which analyzes smart meter data to detect unusual usage patterns that indicate theft, meter tampering, tariff misuse, and other losses. Since adopting this technology, Bihar has identified over 136 potential theft cases within just the first month.
“Providing effective energy analytics to consumers in real-time is an important step towards modernization of Bihar’s power distribution sector. Through REC’s support and Bidgely’s AI-powered analytics technology, we aim to increase transparency, improve billing accuracy and motivate consumers to use electricity in an economical manner,” stated Mahendra Kumar, MD, SBPDCL.

With continued support from the Ministry of Power, Bihar is expanding its use of Bidgely’s AI-powered insights. This includes detailed, hourly data on consumer energy usage, helping optimize grid performance and giving consumers tools to manage their energy consumption more effectively.
