Bolivia’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy Highlights Ambitious Energy Transition Plan at World Governments Summit

Bolivia’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Alejandro Baldivieso, revealed the country’s ambitious energy transition policy during his participation in the World Governments Summit in Dubai. Baldivieso emphasized Bolivia’s commitment to increasing renewable energy sources while harnessing its natural resources, particularly lithium, to support a sustainable energy future.

Bolivia’s current energy mix consists of 67% thermal energy and 33% renewable energy. However, Baldivieso outlined a strategic plan extending through 2033 to boost the share of renewable energy to 65%. The plan includes expanding the country’s solar, wind, and hydroelectric power capacities, leveraging Bolivia’s natural advantages such as high solar radiation levels in the western regions and favorable air density in the east.

One of Bolivia’s key strategic advantages, according to Baldivieso, is its vast lithium reserves. The minister emphasized that these reserves play a critical role in developing storage capacities, which are essential for ensuring the stability of renewable energy sources and facilitating the transition to cleaner energy.

On international collaboration, Baldivieso highlighted ongoing discussions with Emirati companies interested in investing in Bolivia’s renewable energy sector. He also pointed to Bolivia’s central location in Latin America, which offers significant potential for exporting clean energy to neighboring countries, enhancing prospects for international cooperation.

To further strengthen ties, the Bolivian Minister announced plans to organize a specialized workshop focused on three main areas: the oil and gas sector, renewable energy (solar, wind, and hydroelectric), and the lithium sector. This workshop aims to explore investment opportunities and foster collaboration with global companies and Emirati investment funds.
