Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has opened registration for its Q1 2025 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, with bidding set to close on March 14. The initiative supports the UAE’s Year of Community 2025 goals, aiming to drive sustainability through greater participation from individuals, businesses, and organizations.

CECs, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh), serve as the only accredited proof of clean energy consumption, ensuring that the electricity consumed by registered Abu Dhabi-based entities originates from renewable sources. EWEC, the scheme’s sole registrant and auction operator, oversees the implementation of the DoE’s CEC scheme, which aligns with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC Standard).

Growing Demand for Clean Energy

Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, emphasized the rising interest in clean energy across Abu Dhabi. “The increasing demand for Clean Energy Certificates reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction. As a key enabler of the UAE’s clean energy transition, EWEC is facilitating access to renewable energy while actively driving real-world decarbonisation efforts,” he stated.

He further urged businesses and individuals to participate in the initiative, highlighting its impact on economic growth and environmental well-being. “Through initiatives like our CEC auctions, we are enabling collective action towards achieving the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative,” Brice added.

Advancing Clean Energy Adoption

EWEC reported significant progress in 2024 in expanding clean energy adoption across Abu Dhabi. The introduction of wind-generated CECs marked a key milestone, while agreements with major players across healthcare, utilities, and the events industry reinforced the widespread shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

The latest auction underscores Abu Dhabi’s leadership in clean energy adoption and commitment to reducing emissions across multiple sectors.
