The Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge has made history as the first bridge in the world to operate with 98% solar energy, setting a new benchmark in sustainable infrastructure. The achievement highlights Malaysia’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship.
The landmark structure, which connects Tanjung in Kuala Terengganu city center with Seberang Takir, is now officially registered under the Green Energy Tariff and has received certification from The International Tracking Standard Foundation.
Supporting ESG Goals and Sustainable Development
President and CEO of Terengganu Incorporated Group (Terengganu Inc), Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed @ Harun, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Malaysia’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
“The bridge’s annual electricity consumption stands at 176 megawatts for the north tower and 294 megawatts for the south tower,” he stated. “Our transition to renewable energy supports Kuala Terengganu’s goal of becoming a world-class tourism destination.”
The announcement was made during the signing ceremony for the bridge’s management and operation agreement between the Terengganu state government and Terengganu Inc.
Efficient Operations and Long-Term Management
To ensure smooth operations, Terengganu Inc. has appointed its subsidiary, TI Properties Sdn. Bhd., as the official operator of the drawbridge.
Burhanuddin disclosed that as of December 2024, the total operational and maintenance costs of the bridge would amount to RM11.75 million, with RM8.12 million allocated specifically for maintenance.
Authorities expect the bridge’s efficient management to minimize disruptions while enhancing its reputation as a premier infrastructure landmark in Malaysia.
Engineering Excellence and Tourism Boost
Part of the Kuala Terengganu City Center (KTCC) development project under the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), the RM249 million drawbridge is Southeast Asia’s first of its kind.
Spanning 638 meters and standing 12.5 meters above sea level, the bridge features two 15-story towers and a middle section that lifts for ship passage. Since its opening in 2019, the structure has won multiple awards for engineering excellence.
Driving Malaysia’s Green Energy Future
The Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge has emerged as a major tourist attraction, reinforcing the city’s global appeal.
“The integration of renewable energy into the bridge’s operations is a major step toward carbon footprint reduction,” Burhanuddin said. “It showcases Malaysia’s leadership in green infrastructure and sets the stage for future sustainable projects.”
With ongoing enhancements and the adoption of clean energy solutions, the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge remains a symbol of innovation and sustainability, solidifying Malaysia’s position in the global renewable energy sector.
