The first meeting of the Nagaland Solar Mission was held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Dr. J Alam at the Conference Hall of the Chief Secretary on March 24, 2025. The meeting discussed the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in the state, which aims to install rooftop solar panels in residential households.

The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to provide free electricity of up to 300 units per month for one crore households. By installing rooftop solar systems, consumers can reduce their dependence on grid electricity, leading to lower monthly electricity bills. To ease the financial burden on households, the Government of India will provide subsidies ranging from 60% to 54% for 1KW to 3KW of rooftop solar installation costs.

To further support the green energy transition, the Nagaland State Government has decided to supplement the central subsidy with an additional state subsidy. The state will provide an extra subsidy ranging from 36% to 31% for 1KW to 3KW of rooftop solar installation costs. This financial support aims to make rooftop solar more affordable for residents. With both central and state subsidies combined, the total subsidy will range from 96% for systems up to 2KW and 85% for systems up to 3KW. A budget of Rs. 10 crore has been allocated for this initiative in the financial year 2025-26.
