DNV Deploys Advanced Solar Measurement Network Across Italy to Boost Renewable Energy Development

DNV, a leading independent energy expert and assurance provider, has launched an advanced network of solar resource measurement stations across Italy to accelerate solar development and support the countryโ€™s National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) targets. These state-of-the-art stations measure solar irradiance, albedo (the reflectivity of surfaces), and soiling levelsโ€”providing high-accuracy data that enables developers to optimize system design, maximize energy yield, and enhance operational efficiency.

What sets this network apart is its focus on bifacial solar modules, which now represent nearly 40% of new installations in Italy. Each station includes dedicated albedo sensors designed specifically for bifacial technology, offering key insights into ground reflectivity. DNV research indicates that optimizing for albedo can increase energy output by up to 15%. Real-time soiling measurements also allow operators to reduce cleaning costs by up to 30% while maintaining performance, especially important for bifacial systems where surface conditions have a direct impact on output.
