Alstom and Iberdrola Launch Solar Partnership to Cut Emissions at Major Mexican Facility

Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability strategy with the installation of a photovoltaic solar panel system at its manufacturing plant in Ciudad Sahagún. This facility is Alstom’s third largest plant worldwide. The initiative underscores the company’s commitment to decarbonizing its operations and supports its goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.

The project was developed under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Iberdrola México, through its Smart Solar service. Under this agreement, Iberdrola will operate the system for 20 years while Alstom will consume the clean energy it generates. The energy produced is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 0.43 tonnes per megawatt-hour.

The newly installed solar system has a production capacity of 583 kilowatt-hours and will generate approximately 1,220 megawatt-hours annually, covering around 16.8 percent of the plant’s total energy consumption. The 1,080 solar panels installed span over 15,000 square meters, offering a sustainable and cost-efficient alternative to rising electricity prices and energy market volatility. This marks Alstom’s first solar installation of its kind in the Americas.

The project is part of a broader Alstom initiative to transition as many of its global facilities as possible to green energy. To date, the company has installed solar panels at 12 of its sites around the world and has additional installations planned. This initiative contributes to Alstom’s target of reducing its direct and indirect CO₂ emissions from facilities by 40 percent compared to fiscal year 2021/2022 levels.
