Swedish thin film solar cell developer and manufacturer Midsummer AB, a member of the European Solar Manufacturing Council (ESMC), has received a SEK 143.5 million (approximately EUR 13 million) order from a Swedish industrial and defense group. The contract is for a turnkey production line to manufacture flexible thin film solar cells, marking a significant milestone in Midsummerโ€™s strategy to expand its global footprint.

The production line will have an annual capacity of 15 MW and represents the first phase of a planned solar cell manufacturing facility outside of Europe. Future capacity expansions are anticipated as part of the broader rollout.

Midsummer has previously outlined its goal of selling scalable, turnkey solar cell factories โ€” referred to as โ€œmega-factoriesโ€ โ€” with annual capacities of up to 200 MW to partners around the world.

Commenting on the order, Midsummer CEO Eric Jaremalm said: โ€œWe see tremendous potential in offering turnkey production lines and solar factories to customers seeking a rapid green energy transition and electrification of their markets. Many also see the value in local production of the worldโ€™s most environmentally friendly solar cells, which can be installed on rooftops too weak to support traditional silicon panels.

Todayโ€™s order is a strong validation of our strategy. Our technology is proven, and we can quickly establish complete factories; providing all the equipment, managing the entire setup process, and offering support for ongoing operations, service, and panel distribution. We believe this is an attractive proposition for many countries and players.โ€

The DUO system โ€” Midsummerโ€™s flagship turnkey production platform โ€” is specifically designed for high-capacity, durable, and flexible CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) solar cell manufacturing. With its compact design and ultra-low carbon footprint, DUO has become the most widely deployed system of its kind globally, optimized for material efficiency and reliability.

The new order reinforces Midsummerโ€™s position as a key provider of flexible solar technology and supports its long-term vision of accelerating the global energy transition through locally produced, environmentally friendly solar solutions.
