Xcel Energy Appoints Ryan Long As Executive Vice President And Chief Legal & Compliance Officer

Xcel Energy has announced the appointment of Ryan Long as the companyโ€™s new executive vice president and chief legal and compliance officer, effective immediately. Long is currently serving as president of Xcel Energyโ€™s operations in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, and will continue to lead this regional jurisdiction while the company conducts both an internal and external search for his successor in that role.

He succeeds Rob Berntsen, who has taken a position outside the company. In his new role, Long will be responsible for overseeing Xcel Energyโ€™s legal, compliance, and federal affairs teams. He brings significant experience to the position, having previously served as interim general counsel for the company in late 2023 and early 2024.

Bob Frenzel, Xcel Energyโ€™s chairman, president and CEO, stated, โ€œRyan has an extensive legal background as well as demonstrating tremendous leadership in strategic planning, operational considerations and financial results in his current role as president. His legal acumen and jurisdictional expertise are critical assets as we make energy work better for customers. Long began his career with Xcel Energy in late 2015 as a principal attorney. In 2021, he was promoted to vice president and deputy general counsel, where he led legal teams focused on federal and state regulatory issues, environmental matters, and real estate. Prior to joining Xcel Energy, Long worked as an attorney at Faegre Baker Daniels now Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath in Minneapolis, and at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City. Outside of his professional responsibilities, he also serves on the board of directors for the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
