The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has officially commenced construction on one of Egypt’s most ambitious renewable energy projects — a $200 million integrated industrial complex for solar energy component manufacturing, developed in partnership with China’s Sunrev Solar.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone and was attended by SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien and senior officials from Sunrev Solar. The facility, which spans 200,000 square meters, marks a strategic step in Egypt’s transition toward localizing clean energy technologies and strengthening its position as a regional green energy hub.

The project will be developed in two phases. Phase one, valued at $90 million, will see the construction of two fully integrated factories, each with a production capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW) for solar cells and modules. Phase two, with an investment of $110 million, will focus on manufacturing critical raw materials such as silicon ingots and wafers, essential to solar production.

“This landmark investment reflects SCZONE’s strategic vision to localize advanced renewable energy industries and enhance Egypt’s position as a regional clean energy hub,” said SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien. “We’re proud to support a project that combines innovation, job creation, and sustainability.”

Once completed and operational in 2026, the solar complex is expected to create more than 1,800 direct jobs and generate thousands of indirect employment opportunities. Ain Sokhna was strategically selected for the complex due to its port proximity, advanced infrastructure, and competitive investment incentives offered by SCZONE.

Sunrev Solar Managing Director He Fei emphasized the partnership’s potential impact, stating, “We’re bringing our most advanced solar technologies to Egypt. This collaboration reflects a blend of Chinese speed and Egyptian strategic vision to support the country’s green transition.”

The project aligns with Egypt Vision 2030 and supports the country’s national strategy to build a green economy by expanding renewable energy capacity and promoting local manufacturing of clean energy technologies.
