The International Solar Alliance (ISA) marked a significant milestone with the Global Solar Facility Day, hosting high-impact discussions to mobilize investment and accelerate Africaโ€™s solar infrastructure transformation. The event saw participation from Africa50 Group, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Prosperetรฉ, and global infrastructure investors.

Africaโ€™s Solar Facility Moves from Vision to Action

In a key development, Nigeria was announced as the host of the first country-level chapter of the African Solar Facility (ASF), a regional extension of the Global Solar Facility. The ASF aims to mobilize catalytic junior equity to unlock capital for Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) projects. Africa50 and NSIA will collaborate to develop a pipeline of revenue-generating, scalable projects, setting the stage for continent-wide solar expansion.

Indiaโ€™s SECI Model Offers Blueprint for Africa

Delegates visited the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), drawing inspiration from India’s success in scaling solar through competitive bidding, digital auctions, and centralized frameworks. ISA positioned this as a prime example of South-South cooperation, suggesting Africa could adopt similar mechanisms to boost private-sector engagement and infrastructure development.

Asset Monetisation Strategies for Scalable Investment

Panel discussions, featuring insights from industry experts including Suresh Goyal (former CEO, NHAI InvIT), Ram Rakkappan, Ph.D. (CPPIB), and Kritika Gupta (OTPP), explored how Indiaโ€™s asset monetisation strategiesโ€”particularly Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs)โ€”could be adapted to African markets. The conversation underscored the importance of leveraging institutional capital through innovative financial instruments.

The event reaffirmed a unified global commitment to accelerate Africaโ€™s energy transition by developing investable, scalable solar solutions tailored to the continentโ€™s infrastructure needs.
