Citicore Expands Negros Solar Capacity To 94 MWp, Boosting The Philippines Clean Energy Push

Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) has expanded its solar power capacity in the Philippines with the commissioning of a new 69-megawatt peak (MWp) photovoltaic project in Negros Occidental. With this addition, the total capacity of its solar facility in the area has reached 94 MWp.

The new project, known as Citicore Solar Negros Occidental 2, is located in Silay City and covers an area of about 69 hectares. It builds on the existing 25-MWp Citicore Solar Negros Occidental plant, which has been operational since 2016. The expansion marks a significant step in CREC’s efforts to grow its renewable energy portfolio in the country.

The newly commissioned capacity is expected to support rising electricity demand, especially during the peak summer months in the Visayas grid. This is important as power consumption usually increases during this period due to higher temperatures and increased use of cooling systems.

The project also aligns with the Philippines’ long-term renewable energy targets. The country aims to achieve 35% of its energy mix from renewable sources by 2030 and increase it further to 50% by 2040. Developments like this solar expansion are expected to play a key role in meeting these goals.

Citicore Solar Negros Occidental 2 is also part of the government’s Green Energy Auction Programme Phase 2, making it the sixth project to be completed under this initiative. The programme is designed to encourage more investments in clean energy across the country.

Looking ahead, CREC has indicated that the project could be further expanded to reach 100 MWp. The company also plans to bring four more renewable energy plants online in April, strengthening its position in the growing clean energy sector.
