In a strategic move to accelerate clean energy adoption in fragile mountain ecosystems and climate-vulnerable regions, the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on solar energy initiatives.
The agreement was formalized during the Seventh ISA Regional Committee Meeting for Asia & the Pacific, held in Colombo, and signed by ISA Director General Mr. Ashish Khanna and ICIMOD Director General Dr. Pema Gyamtsho.
The MoU outlines collaborative efforts in key areas including battery storage, green hydrogen, solar-powered healthcare infrastructure, and solar water pumping. The partnership aims to integrate policy frameworks, technological innovation, and research to deliver science-backed energy solutions tailored for remote and high-risk communities.
โThis partnership enhances our ability to deliver impactful and localized renewable energy interventions to the communities most vulnerable to climate change,โ said Mr. Khanna.
Dr. Gyamtsho emphasized the importance of leveraging clean energy to build climate resilience in mountainous regions. โOur shared goal is to empower these communities with sustainable energy access that aligns with both environmental preservation and socio-economic development,โ he stated.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward deploying context-specific, low-carbon technologies to some of the worldโs most environmentally sensitive and underserved areas.
