Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has called on all local government units (LGUs) in the province to adopt solar energy systems within the next three years, marking a decisive step in the regionโs broader shift toward renewable energy under the SecuRE Negros program.
The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the Renewable Energy Week Expo 2025 held at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City. In his speech, Governor Lacson reiterated the provinceโs commitment to sustainability, emphasizing that Negros Occidental is not only setting ambitious energy goals but also actively executing them.
โWe are walking the talk, as it were, along with other local governments that have adopted solar photovoltaic solutions,โ Lacson said. โOur goal: All LGUs will โsolarizeโ within the next three years.โ
As part of its own initiatives, the provincial government earlier this year signed a contract with WeGen Energy Philippines Inc. to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across seven government facilities. The total installed capacity of 1,270.5 kilowatts is projected to meet at least 40 percent of the provinceโs electricity needs, while generating estimated annual savings of PHP9.637 million. Over a 25-year period, the savings are expected to amount to PHP404.537 million.
Governor Lacson also emphasized the importance of policy and regulatory reforms at the local level to encourage renewable energy investments. He called on LGUs to harmonize investment and energy codes, establish electronic one-stop shops for approvals, and align with national guidelines to accelerate the processing of energy infrastructure projects.
Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, who delivered the keynote address, expressed strong support for the provinceโs SecuRE Negros program on behalf of the Department of Energy. He stressed that renewable energy is not just about innovation, but a long-term solution for energy security and sustainability.
โMore importantly, it is about securing the provinceโs future while respecting the environment and our communities,โ Fuentebella stated. โWe stand with you in bringing your RE goals into reality.โ
Now in its second year, the Renewable Energy Week Expo serves as a regional platform for showcasing renewable energy technologies, promoting community-led sustainability efforts, and fostering dialogue between stakeholders. The event is organized by the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental in partnership with the Negrosanon Initiative for Climate and the Environment Inc. and the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation.
The expo and the governorโs three-year solar adoption plan reflect the provinceโs growing momentum in creating a resilient, sustainable, and economically sound energy future powered by renewables.
