Misk City Signs 20-Year Solar Power Deal with Emerge to Advance Green Urban Vision

Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, has entered into a long-term solar energy agreement with Misk City to supply sustainable electricity for the next 20 years. The deal marks a significant step forward in Misk City’s mission to become a regional model of environmental innovation and sustainable urban living.

The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony held at Misk City in Riyadh. Attendees included David Henry, CEO of Misk City; Omar AlDaweesh, Emerge board member and CEO for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain at EDF Group; Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge; and representatives from the French Embassy, including Economic Counsellor Samuel Ménard and Nuclear and Renewable Energy Advisor Anouar Mekkas.

Under the agreement, Emerge will develop and operate a 621-kilowatt peak (kWp) rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plant installed on a carport and other structures within Misk City. Once operational, the solar system is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and support Misk City’s pursuit of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The installation reflects the City’s broader aim to position itself as one of the most environmentally advanced urban communities in the region.

Misk City is the world’s first nonprofit urban development of its kind. Aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the city integrates education, culture, innovation, and sustainability to create a dynamic and inclusive environment. It is envisioned as a regional hub for knowledge, digital media, the arts, and entrepreneurship—fostering talent and creativity in a human-centered setting.

The solar project builds upon a framework agreement signed earlier this year and reinforces the shared commitment of both parties to clean energy innovation and sustainable urban transformation. Emerge will deliver the project end-to-end, overseeing engineering, design, financing, procurement, construction, and long-term operations and maintenance.

David Henry, CEO of Misk City, emphasized the alignment of the project with the City’s core vision. “From day one, Misk City was imagined as a forward-thinking, sustainable community. This solar energy project is a significant step in fulfilling our commitment to environmental stewardship and future-focused development,” he said.

Omar AlDaweesh added, “This partnership with Misk City underscores the Kingdom’s accelerating shift toward clean energy. Emerge is proud to support an urban development that places innovation and environmental responsibility at its core.”

Ali Alshimmari, Emerge board member and Director of Strategic & Special Projects at Masdar, said the agreement reflects Emerge’s commitment to delivering tailored energy solutions. “By leveraging the global expertise of Masdar and EDF, we ensure that every phase—from design to long-term operations—meets the highest standards of quality and innovation.”

Established in 2021, Emerge offers turnkey solar PV, battery storage, and hybrid energy solutions for a wide range of business sectors. The company’s solar energy agreements allow clients to benefit from clean power without upfront investment, helping reduce both operational costs and carbon footprints.

Through this agreement, Misk City will harness solar energy one of Saudi Arabia’s most abundant resources to power its infrastructure and pave the way for sustainable cities across the Kingdom and beyond.
