World’s First Commercial CO₂ Storage Project Reaches Major Milestone in Norway

TotalEnergies, together with its partners Equinor and Shell, has successfully transported the first CO₂ volumes by ship from Heidelberg Materials’ cement plant in Brevik, Norway, to the Northern Lights facilities in Øygarden. The CO₂ was then injected 2,600 meters beneath the seabed into storage reservoirs located 100 kilometers off the western coast of Norway.

Northern Lights is the world’s first commercial CO₂ transport and storage project. Its initial phase offers a storage capacity of 1.5 million tons of CO₂ per year, which has already been fully booked by customers in Norway and continental Europe. In March 2025, the partners announced the Final Investment Decision for Phase 2, which will expand capacity to over 5 million tons annually from 2028.

CO₂ transport and storage is a critical enabler for reducing industrial emissions in Europe. Northern Lights has already established a solid customer base across the region, including five industrial partners: Hafslund Celsio and Heidelberg Materials in Norway, Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, and Stockholm Exergi in Sweden. “With the start of operations of Northern Lights, we are entering a new phase for the CCS industry in Europe. This industry now moves to reality, offering hard-to-abate sectors a credible and tangible way to reduce CO2emissions, said Arnaud Le Foll, Senior Vice-President New Business – Carbon Neutrality at TotalEnergies.
